Flooring Cost Estimator
Estimate the total cost of flooring a room including materials, underlayment, and installation labor.
Formula
Net Room Area (sq ft) = Length × Width
Purchase Area (sq ft) = Net Area × (1 + Waste% ÷ 100)
Material Cost ($) = Purchase Area × Material Cost per sq ft
Underlayment Cost ($) = Purchase Area × Underlayment Cost per sq ft
Installation Cost ($) = Net Area × Installation Cost per sq ft
Total Cost ($) = Material Cost + Underlayment Cost + Installation Cost
Effective Cost per sq ft ($) = Total Cost ÷ Net Area
Note: Installation labor is applied to the net room area; materials and underlayment include the waste factor since extra material must be purchased.
Assumptions & References
- A 10% waste factor is the industry standard for straight-lay patterns; diagonal or herringbone patterns may require 15–20%.
- Material costs vary widely: vinyl/laminate ~$1–$5/sq ft, hardwood ~$3–$10/sq ft, tile ~$2–$15/sq ft (HomeAdvisor, 2024).
- Installation labor typically ranges from $1.50–$4.00/sq ft depending on flooring type and region (Angi, 2024).
- Underlayment (foam, cork, or felt) typically costs $0.25–$1.00/sq ft and is required for most floating floors.
- This estimate excludes subfloor repair, furniture moving, baseboard removal/reinstallation, and disposal fees.
- Prices are estimates only; obtain quotes from local contractors for accurate project costs.
